Church News and Events

For most of the year there are lots of things happening in our Parish and members of our congregations, friends and visitors are all welcome to share in them.

On the following pages you will find news of things that have happened recently as well as forthcoming events, including the list of parish trips.

Visit of the Gloucester Cathedral Youth Choir

We provided hospitality to 33 young people and 6 staff staff members from the Gloucester Youth Choir from 22-24 July.

During their time here they sang in a wonderful concert at the Church of El Salvador, on the Balcon de Europa, Nerja under their Director, Ashley Grote.

The church was packed with an enthusiastic audience who were truly inspired by the outstanding performance of these young people.

Remembrance Sunday

Mothers’ Union
On Mothering Sunday 2009 we launched a new branch of the Mothers’ Union in this parish.

Several new members joined and others had been members previously.  We were pleased to welcome our Diocesan President, Mrs Barbara Woods, to our meeting on 10 June.  Our branch meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month.

Our Leader is Margaret Campbell +34 696 062 864

Have you moved to a new home?
It is not unusual for people who come and live in our parish to move to a different apartment, house or villa.

The Church provides a lovely short service of Blessing of a Home, which some feel is very appropriate as they settle into a new home  - and it provides an ideal opportunity to have a home-warming party!

If you would like Fr Geoff to come and bless your home, please ask him!

A monthly Taizé Prayer is held in the Parroquial Virgen de la Antigua, Almuñecar.  This is an ecumenical service led by Fr Geoff and Don Antonio Jesus. This is a quiet, reflective form of worship based on the worship of the Community at Taizé, during which a number of the famous Taizé songs are sung and it will include a period of silence.  For the date of the next service please ring one of the Church Wardens.

Services at Residencia Costa Tropical

A monthly Eucharist is held in the Chapel of

the Residencia Costa Tropical, Almuñecar

which is attended by some residents of the

home as well as some members of our

congregations. For the date of the next Eucharist, please ring one of the Church Wardens.

This Home is run by the

        Evangelisches Johanneswerk

            of the German Church.

Welcome to Ivan Timonin

Ivan is a licensed Reader from Ottowa, Canada who has been given Permission to Officiate in this parish during his stay here with us.  His sister has come with him and they will be living near the centre of Nerja.

As a Reader, Ivan will be able to share in the leading of our worship (though not consecrate the Holy Communion) including preaching.  We look forward to his sharing in our mission and ministry here.

Our Archdeaconry Link with the Anglican Diocese of Peru

A Word of Welcome from
Bishop Bill Godfrey, Bishop of the Diocese of Peru

The Anglican Church of Peru is a missionary diocese with growing churches, forming part of the Body of Christ in South America's third largest country.

There are parishes and missions in Lima, Arequipa, Juliaca, Ica and Cabanaconde as well as numerous social outreach and development programs so desperately needed in this poor country.

As a missionary diocese we still rely on support from overseas mission personnel, mission organizations, and direct support from churches and individuals.

As part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which has more than 80 million members found in 160 different countries, our spirituality is catholic, evangelical and charismatic - catholic in that we preserve the faith of the early Christian Church, with its sacraments and three fold ministry of bishops, priests and deacons; evangelical in our emphasis on the authority of the Holy Scriptures and the proclamation of the word of God; and charismatic in that we rely on the grace and power of God for our work and ministry.

The Anglican Church of Peru is a diocese which is clearly both Peruvian and Anglican in its identity.  Its roots and history go back to the first half of the nineteenth century with the arrival of English and N. American immigrants. But Peruvian congregations are now the overwhelming majority, even though there is still a live English-speaking congregation at the Cathedral. National clergy and lay ministers make the Church and its worship relevant to the people they serve in Christ’s name and in many of our congregations Latin American Christian music enhances the worship.

A group of 2 clergy and 8 lay people from our Archdeaconry are going to Peru in November to do some practical work to help the Church there and to explore how we might develop this link further.
