A Special Guest

On 8 May we were delighted to welcome the Revd. John Bell (pictured right with Fr Geoff) to preach for us and to teach us one of his own hymns.

John Bell is a member of the Iona Community and a Church of Scotland minister.

He travels world-wide to preach and lecture and occasionally can be heard on BBC Radio 4 “Thought for the Day”.

Mothers' Union

Our branch is continuing to support a children's home in Lanjarón in the Alpujarras.  The members prepared gift boxes for each of the children and then took them to the home just before Christmas.  the children welcomed the MU members warmly and sang some lively Spanish carols before joining in with some English ones.  The delight and appreciation shown by the children on receiving their presents was really wonderful and a joy to behold.

The members of our branch will be leading speacial prayers during our Mothering Sunday services on March 18th and at leasyt one new member will be enrolled on that day.

Another new member was admitted into the Mothers' Union during a Eucharist at the Archdeaconry Synod on February 1st.  Fr Geoff became our first male and also first ordained member of our branch.

We are always delighted to welcome new members, male or female.  To find out more, look at our link with the Mothers' Union in our Dicese by clicking here.  Our leader is Margaret Campbell (+34) 696 062 864.

Some new gifts for our Church

In recent months we have been delighted to receive a number of gifts, donated by generous members of our congregation.

Mac MacKenzie skilfully made and donated
two beautiful oak acolyte candlesticks
to enhance our worship
and these were used for the first time
in the Palm Sunday procession.

We introduced a Gospel procession
using the acolyte candlesticks
and so also bought a lovely copy
of the Gospels of our Lord.

In July a new Altar Book was dedicated
which contains all the seasonal material
as well as the Ordinary Time services
for our weekly Eucharist at Nerja.
We are extremely grateful for this anonymous gift.

Ash Wednesday

There will be celebrations of Holy Communion with Imposition of Ashes
in the Church Shop at 9.30am,
and in the Fishermen's Chapel, Almuñécar at 11.30am.

It is hoped that many people will come to observe
this solemn and holy day as we mark the beginning of Lent.

Lent Course - Experiencing God's Love

Our Lent Course this year explores five biblical images in which our lives are changed by walking with Christ.

  • Being rooted in prayer and the scriptures

  • Being cleansed through baptism, confession and forgiveness

  • Knowing that God lights our way and dispels our fears

  • Being tended through care for one another and the world

  • Being welcomed to feats at God's table, now and in the world to come

The course will use some familiar psalms as the biblical basis and each session will include a film-clip, group discussions, other activities and prayer.

The first session is on Wednesday, 29 February at 11.00am in the Meeting Room at San Miguel, Nerja, and continues for the next four Wednesdays during Lent.  Each session will last about 1½ hours.

We hope that many in our parish will participate in this Lent Course and will find it a way to deepen their faith and commitment to God.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting

This important event when we receive reports on the life of the parish and elect Churchwardens and PCC members, will take place on Sunday, March 25th at 2.00pm in the Meeting Room at San Miguel.  All those who are on the Electoral Roll are eligible to attend and vote at this meeting.

Holy Week and Easter

This is the most important week of the Church's year when we follow Our Lord's way of the cross and share the joy of His ressurrection.

Palm Sunday, April 1st

Our worship on Palm Sunday begins with a procession of Palms.

At Almuñécar we meet at the Chinasol Hotel at 9.30am.  At Nerja we gather in the Meeting Room of San Miguel, ready to start at 12 noon.

During the service, there will be a dramatic reading of the Passion according to St Mark.

Maundy Thursday, April 5th

On this day, the Church celebrates the Institution of the Holy Communion at the Last Supper, re-enacts the washing of the Disciples' feet, and then waits in silence with Our Lord as he goes into the Garden of Gethsemane.  "Could you not watch with me one hour?"

Our service is at 7.30pm in the Fishermen's Chapel, Almuñécar.

Good Friday, April 6th

The cross is the focus of our prayers and thoughts as we go with Our Lord to Calvary.

Our Liturgy in the Fishermen's Chapel, Almuñécar, includes the Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion.  The service starts at 7.30pm.

Easter Eve, April 7th

Once it is dark, the Church meets to light the Paschal Candle, keep a solemn Vigil during which we hear how God has saved his people.

We renew our Baptismal Vows and joyfully celebrate the Lord's resurrection.

We meet for worship outside the Fishermen's Chapel, Almuñécar, at 10.00pm.

EASTER DAY, April 8th

Today we joyfully celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ and that we also can share in his new risen life.

Our Festival Eucharists are at the usual Sunday times:  9.30am at the Fishermen's Chapel, Almuñécar, and 12 noon in the Church of San Miguel, Nerja.

This year we are delighted to include the baptism of two children as part of the service at San Miguel.

Christ is risen, He is risen indeed!!  Alleluia!!

Easter Lunch

We are holding an Easter Day lunch at the Al Andalus Hotel, Maro, Nerja at 2.00pm on April 8th.  Tickets are just €18, available from Judith Austwick on 695 756 367.

Have you moved to a new home?

It is not unusual for people who come and live in our parish
to move to a different apartment, house or villa.

The Church provides a lovely short service of Blessing of a Home, which some feel is very appropriate as they settle into a new home - and it provides an ideal opportunity to have a home-warming party!

If you would like Fr Geoff to come and bless your home,
please ask him!

We launched this exciting new initiative in October 2010,
so we celebrated our first birthday (left) on 18 October 2011.

Messy Church welcomes people of all ages
and will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month:
adults come with a child in tow, or vice versa!

During a typical session there will be a variety of craft activities
based on a biblical theme, then
a short, informal worship celebration followed by some food.

It is meant to be fun as well as helping
those taking part to grow closer to God.

It is Church (but of a different kind) not a club.

We know that there are lots of young families living in Nerja and Almuñecar
but many of them find it hard to go to the traditional Church which meets on Sundays.
So we want to reach out and offer them a completely different experience of Church but one which we hope will help them to come to know and love God.

Messy Church welcomes the whole family together, not just the children. As they arrive they can have a drink and biscuit and play board games.

Messy Church begins with art and craft activities from 4.00pm.

After this there is a short worship celebration in the Church followed by some refreshments ending about 5.30pm to 6.00pm
